Yo ho ho

Piracy on the high seas merited the death penalty until 1998. Now the Royal Navy has taken advice not to intervene lest the human rights of pirates be compromised by sharia courts. Somebody get the Archbishop of Canterbury on the phone... Worse yet, lest pirates claim asylum - and the dole - in the UK.

The guidance was sharply criticised by Julian Brazier MP, the Conservative shipping spokesman, who said: “These people commit horrendous offences. The solution is not to turn a blind eye but to turn them over to the local authorities. The convention on human rights quite rightly doesn’t cover the high seas. It’s a pathetic indictment of what our legal system has come to.”

The Foreign Office is four-square in favour of this latest sordid mistreatment of the Royal Navy. They do not call it "foreign" for nothing.

Related: Cuff links and conversion. Despite my generalized irritation with Prince Charles and fervent hope Parliament will legislate his eldest son on to the throne, I have to admit he makes excellent biscuits. I was also impressed with his forthcoming cuff link collection until I noticed they are of "arabesque" design. You could knock me over with a feather.

Next: Prince Charles on what Islam can teach Britain.

Islam can teach us today a way of understanding and living in the world which Christianity itself is poorer for having lost. At the heart of Islam is its preservation of an integral view of the Universe. Islam-like Buddhism and Hinduism-refuses to separate man and nature, religion and science, mind and matter, and has preserved a metaphysical and unified view of ourselves and the world around us. . . . But the West gradually lost this integrated vision of the world with Copernicus and Descartes and the coming of the scientific revolution. A comprehensive philosophy of nature is no longer part of our everyday beliefs.

Also not part of our daily lives: Witch burning and scurvy (see above re. pirates). Not to mention the divine right of kings. God bless Oliver Cromwell.

Also related: Sheik Charles of England, "The extent to which the Prince is admired by Muslims-even to the point of hero-worship-has not yet sunk into the consciousness of the British public..." and Ali Sina (and much else), "What's not to like about Islam if you're the Prince of Wales"?

"Well, I think I know why; because cleaving to Islam is the one way that men who wish to appear liberal and enlightened can promote reactionary ideas. Monarch-worshipping, woman-oppressing, non-democratic — what's there not for Charles to like!"

Update: Not to exclude the Army from this generalized leave taking of the senses. The British Army is scaling back operations against the Taliban as it worries it has killed too many of them.

British troops are to scale back attacks on the Taliban after killing 7,000 insurgents in two years of conflict, defence sources said last week. The paratroopers’ commanders hope they can cut the deaths, which they fear are a boost for the Taliban when fighters recruited from the local population are killed, as the dead insurgent’s family then feels a debt of honour to take up arms against British soldiers.

They go on to cite the dreaded "cycle of violence". Here is a thought: Instead of providing safe harbour and material support to the men who killed three thousand people in a morning, thereby triggering the downfall of their evil, barbarous regime, the Taliban might have considered their risk of escalating a "cycle of violence" by f*cking with the sword and the arm of the West. Speaking only for myself here, but I do not feel, say, 1% satisfied with the number of dead Taliban to date. Add a couple zeros to the tally for the Army so far and I might begin to feel - just throwing out a number here, you understand - 10% satisfied. And that only if I knew for damned sure the Afghan front in this game of global jihadi whack-a-mole had been pacified for good.

Trust the British Establishment to have it 100% wrong yet again. One bit of good news. Set to train the Afghan army, India has not forgotten what it means to be British.

Update: Quotulatiousness notes at least two further outrages: "Security theatre" random traffic stops including a racial identity test and a court ruling a "right to life" under combat conditions. Here is an alternative: If the state has taken it upon itself to check the "race" of motorists stopped under the Terrorism Act it would be a better use of police time to stop the people most likely to detonate themselves. Start with doctors and engineers. As for a right to life in combat, equip the troops properly; the best possible armament being rules of engagement that will not land a soldier in front of some kangaroo human rights proceeding.

Right then. It's time for the Dominion to bail out the Empire a fourth time.

Dust off those musty WW2 plans to relocate the Windsors to Hatley Castle. We will have to amend the Statute of Westminster to make their Parliament subordinate to ours, and then we'll appoint someone like Lewis Mackenzie as Governor-General of the colony of Britain until the insanity is quelled.
