I Samuel 2:28

Published one year ago but if anything more relevant today, Spengler argues Israel is the muslim world's last, best hope. Common wisdom holds that Israel's existence constitutes an irritant; is often held to be the sole cause of the "resentment" which drives the enemy. Spengler argues just the opposite is true and he is correct to do so.

The Israeli presence in the territory of the ancient Jewish commonwealth, on land that once belonged to the Dar al’Islam, offers the single, slender hope for the future of the Muslim world, precisely because it constitutes a humiliation. The premise of Western policy is to tread lightly upon Muslim sensibilities. That is an error of first magnitude, for Muslim sensibilities are what prevents the Islamic world from creating modern states. Islam cannot produce the preconditions for democracy in the Western sense out of its own resources.

Spengler goes on to argue democracy works in Christian countries whose ethos is founded in love and in Japan whose ethics are founded in humility. Humility also grounds Hindu ethics - albeit in a different sense - and democracy as a going concern in India. Neither love nor humility are foundational to islam, a deen which reserves humility not toward other human beings but for an absolute god. The Arabs and the rest have an existential choice to make. The responsibility for their choice is not ours.

He concludes:

Washington’s misguided effort to foster Islamic democracy might be the stupidest idea in the history of foreign policy. It began in the late 1970s with Jimmy Carter’s backing for the Ayatollah Khomeini against the Shah of Iran. It may end with simultaneous civil war in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, Lebanon and the West Bank. If that occurs, think of Rwanda and multiply by a thousand.

Are you listening, President-elect Obama?

While I am quoting the man at length, I will also point to Spengler from October 28, 2003, "Mahathir is right: Jews do rule the world." He explains what he means by this:

Why, Arabs (and many Europeans) ask themselves, should the greatest power in the world care about the fate of a few million leftovers from an ancient past, colonizing a corner of the Mediterranean in order to preserve their battered nationhood? Why would America make so many enemies and lose so many friends over the Jews? Can anything but a vast and insidious conspiracy explain such irrational behavior?

That is a fatal error. America may be a great power, but it is composed of individuals who consider themselves weak. They want the respect of their leaders and the protection of their laws even when they are weak, poor and despised. Their ancestors came to America in the hope of finding such a haven. Fairness and sympathy for the underdog are not merely a sentimental issue in the US; they are woven into the fabric of America's being. America is the political realization of the slave-religion, the cult of the creator of heaven and earth who cannot help but answer the cry of the widow, the fatherless, the poor, and the stranger. The more you tell Americans that they should abandon their friends in the interest of political advantage, the likelier they are to reach for their guns (and most of them own guns).

Thank God. Again, are you listening Barack Obama? Finally, Spengler and another wind up: "What the Jews won't tell you":

As I have argued previously in this space, America comes closer than has any other political entity towards fulfilling the Christian idea of an ecclesia, of an assembly of souls called out of the nations. That is why Americans have no fundamental issue with the Jews. Americans enjoy the newborn's sense of immortality, because they have exchanged cultural memory for the promise of a new beginning.
