What if Fred doesn’t do it

Postpolitical's Jason McBride - a Fred Thompson man - reconsiders the Rudy Giuliani candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination; something all American social conservatives may have to do unless they want a Hilary Clinton Supreme Court for the next 20 to 40 years.

Is he perfect? Absolutely not. Has he a difference in the defining social issue of the Republican Party? Yes. Do I feel a more rounded, traditional conservative like Fred Thompson would carry the party mantle better? Yes I do. But I can’t help but flirting with the good parts of Rudy Giuliani. I’ll explain…

As it is written: Read the whole thing. And particularly for his criticism of Mitt Romney. Spot on.

Thompson may be a more generic kind of general conservative, but he's also a surprising lightweight. A total of 8 years in the Senate is his only *truly* relevant experience. Only Barak Obama has less going for him in that department.

I can only assume you are counting Hillary Clinton's stint as chairwoman of the Task Force on National Health Care Reform as experience equal to that second Senate term.

I do not count the Olympics or a single term as governor of Massachusetts for much either, btw.

Though I am foreigner and naturally defer to American judgment in these matters.
