Silbervogel sub-orbital

SangerAmerikabomberProject.jpg

For reasons that are obscure to me I have been obsessed with the notion of underground Nazi UFO bases in Antarctica. At least one contributing factor this week was a recurrent, attenuated meme to the effect that al Qaeda were not the first villains to consider flying aircraft into buildings. Well, yes, we don't call them islamikazis for nothing. But Imperial Japan aside, the Nazis, it transpires, conceived of an Amerikabomber which would incorporate smaller, manned flying bombs carried under the wing of a mother bomber.

Which lead me to the Sanger Amerikabomber Project and this animation of an "antipodal bomber" meant to deliver a radiological weapon to any city on Earth. Horrifying and fascinating how easily things might have gone the other way.

Wow, hadn't heard of those babies before.

True, if Britain hadn't lasted through 1940, who knows how things would have turned out on the Eastern Front; the Royal Navy would have been lost or at least sidelined; there likely would not have been a D-Day and Nazi Germany might have gone into the late 40s/early 50s as world leaders in rocketry with this kind of weapon delivery in association with atomic bombs. Today's world would be unrecognizeable.

What alarms me most - well, aside from how this anticipates "global strike" by fifty years - is its suggestion the Nazis could have deployed radiological, if not atomic, weapons as city killers. Of course, designing it and engineering it are two different problems but given the rest of their V program it might not be wise to bet against them succeeding.

I too have always bene interested in the Nazi obsession with occultish things and the concept of a base in the Mountains of Madness :)

Never heard of the Amerikabomber though.. missed that little bit of history when I was a kid. Probably would have been the straw on the hypothetical camels back that would have drove me to aeronautics instead of geo-chemical (i.e. BORING) sciences.

One must remember one of the basic principals of warfare that NO-ONE would have dared speak back in the days of the war. The Germans had no hope of world conquest. You cannot garrison a planet taken over under the flag of an ideology that simply angers everyone around you. Unless of course you have a clone army that pumps out tens of thousands of adult stormtroopers every month. They were destined to either stop and hold position after a certain section of the world was obtained (the smart thing to do) or spread themselves, their resources and their technolgy too thin.
