Metallica: Sad But True

James Hetfield explains his views are not entirely Sympatico with the organizers of Live Earth.

"I really avoided the press around the Live Earth day. I didn't quite agree with what was going on there. Politics drive me crazy, and I don't like talking politics. Politics get in the way of things; they get in the way of getting things done, and getting our music across is what we wanna do — we don't wanna cloud it with 'Democrat, Republican,' whatever. Our philosophy is 'think for yourself' at the end of the day — do what you think feels right. I really believe that humans will survive. I have a lot of faith in mankind that we will overcome and adapt — whatever it is; whether it's man-made or God-made, or Earth/Mother Nature — we have a lot of smart people on this planet that will make something good out of bad."

Quite right. According to Tim Blair, their sales are up 800% too after that little performance, btw. You can't argue with results. Now is the time at the Flea when we dance.

Inotherwords he is admitting they did it for profile. I bet some of his fellow artists won't be impressed as they are trying to cover-up exactly the same behaviour. At least he admits it and for that you have to give him some respect.

I disagree slightly... I think Hetfield is going a bit further than saying something to the effect of having pretended to agree but really having done it for business. I think he is effectively disregarding the stated intent of the show - and its performers - but stating directly the obscene kernel. In other words, Hetfield's statement is not so much truthful as perverse in its refusal to observe the niceties which prop of polite society. It is the most properly metal thing anyone in that band has said in years.
