The Prophet

Flea-readers who listen to Hugh Hewitt know it is all Mitt Romney all the time. True, Hugh has a book to sell, and fair dues, but his claims not to have decided which of the major Republican candidates he supports strikes me to be incredible. Yes, it is likely he will support almost any Republican over almost any Democrat - even McCain if it comes down to the crunch - but Romney is clearly his preferred candidate.
It may be a tough sell. Hugh can circumvent Evangelical criticism of Mormonism on his radio show by the simple expedient of cutting off callers but I suspect there is no way that criticism can be stifled in the primaries. If Romney is the best option the "social conservatives" - the "centre-right" in Hewitt's terminology - have for the nomination I suspect we may be more likely to see a President Giuliani (and a good thing, too). There are going to be all sorts of purported revelations about Mormonism as this process proceeds, some of it overtly polemical. The Story of Mormonism, "Real Mormon theology revealed" is typical of a genre of Protestant tract rhetoric we can expect to be hearing a lot more of depending on how Mitt Romney gets on. Increasingly, we can also expect to see these talking points taken up by moonbats; much as they now bark in contrived outrage at religious blasphemy against "the Prophet" (chopping off heads variety) I expect they will even come to the defense of Christ provided it allows them to level charges of heresy against a Republican presidential candidate.
A quick search of the tubes reveals more of what we are in for. Take the Mountain Meadow Massacre (9/11...1857), Mormon taqiyya and some delightfully sinister secret temple ceremonies involving horned-rim glasses, for example. Just remember the Grand Hailing Signal of Distress if any of this is a bit much.
Joseph Smith was emo, btw, which for me is basically a deal-breaker. Related: Terminator 4: Protecting Jesus Christ.

It seems that Romney is every bit as socially liberal as Giuliani... you don't get to be governor of Massachusetts by hatin' on gays and honking for pro-life.
But will he cut taxes, cut government spending, and kick terrorist ass?
Will any Republican?

I agree it is hilarious how Romney and Giuliani are both scrambling right-wards on "social issues". But then I also think that "the right" in the United States has changed these last several years; partly as time moves on but largely as a reaction to the maniacal bigotry of our enemies. It is my impression much of what would have left "the right" frothing at the mouth ten years ago now elicits a shrug of the shoulders. Conversely, "the left" has largely abandoned its commitment to equality for so-called minorities (women not being a statistical minority, of course) provided the only rights being infringed are those of far away peoples about whom we know nothing.
But I digress. My main point is to agree with your skepticism about any Republican taking a sufficiently tough line in defense of civilization. More than a few of my right-of-centre Canadian friends seem to have concluded the toughest potential option on the table is HRC. As much as if I had the chose I would be voting Giuliani, I tend to agree Hillary might be more daunting if cornered.

Based on his presentations at CPAC and elsewhere, Romney's commitment to facing down the terrorists seems to be more rhetoric than conviction. I'd still support him over any Democrat imaginable, emphatically including Hillary. The woman can fight like a rabid wolverine when she feels her own interests are threatened, but that has little or nothing to do with the interests of the US or our allies.
One last thing: That "emo Joseph Smith" link is a classic example of why teachers tell their students not to use Wikipedia as a reference source.

Perhaps it is easy for us foreign northern types to misunderestimate the dangers of an HRC presidency.
Though I think you will find I was not quite linking Wikipedia for my emo reference... :)

Okay, Wikipedia, Encyclopedia of Stupid. Whatever. I stand corrected, sir.

I thought it was wiki for sure, until I looked around a bit more. What a great spoof!

Hasn't Hilary come out recently with a plan for withdrawal from Iraq (complete with dates)? As much as she is clamouring to be viewed as a moderate, I don't think she'd treat the WoT as the vital conflict that it is. You think she'd stand up to Iran? Hezbollah? Hamas/Fatah? I doubt it.
We've got a long way to go before the election race really heats up. Here's hoping someone else steps up and provides a better option!

"Choice"... If I had the "choice". PIMF!
My thinking about HRC runs like this: She needs a Falklands to become Thatcher. If her Falklands is by way of Tehran all the better.

Romney has a lot of things wrong with him that have nothing to do with his Mormonism. I am supporting Rep Ron Paul the only decent candidate of the lot.
