Les 100 jours
The new French Prime Minister, Dominique de Villepin has an inspiration and an explanation for dealing with France's economic malaise. Call on the memory of Napoleon for guidance and blame the English for French difficulties. Let's get this straight: the French vote against the EU "constitution" but Tony Blair is to blame for its failure because he subsequently canceled the UK vote. Meanwhile, high French unemployment is in some phantasy sense the result of low unemployment in countries following an "Anglo-Saxon" economic model. Now, far be it from to me to suggest it is precising this sort of thinking that resulted in Napoleon having his hat handed to him at Waterloo but I am not above making sly remarks to that effect.
"We have to be lucid enough to recognise we are in the fog," he wrote in his weblog. "Our capacity for taking the initiative has been reduced. The Franco-German motor is broken down. The liberal-Atlanticist vision of Europe has the wind in its sails."
Alain Jupp's blog looks like it might actually be a blog. I am surprised to see it called a "blog" rather than some silly word made up by a French ministry of linguistic purity. Only more evidence of that perfidious wind in the sails.
