Prime Minister Belinda Stronach
Hey, it's not like those words are never going to be strung together in that order. Belinda Stronach, apparently reaching a similar decision to my own, has decided it is better to fight for a renewed democracy in a centrist party rather than continue to support the Conservative Party platform (hat tip to PolSpy).
"I respect deeply the moral positions that some of you may have, but I cannot bring myself to support a status quo that says to another citizen that he or she cannot enjoy the same civil rights I already have," she says in a statement posted prominently on her web site. "This is just not fair."

Flea, long-time listener, first-time poster. Unlike yours, I fear her stroll across the floor wasn't based on principle.

Damn. That's what I get for not using <sarc> tags. :-(

A centrist party committed to fleecing us at their will, mutating the constitution whenever convenient, and ignoring half the country in neat regional or demographic segments in hot pursuit of power at all costs. I'm sorry, Nick, but I don't call that "renewed democracy" - more like government set to rot hotly in the sun. A rich young woman fulfilling the program of Paul Desmarais is also not anything like democracy either, but I'm also someone who believes that the religious should remain as free to live by the dictates of their conscience as gays should be allowed to find legal recognition of theirs, but only just short of legally mandated "tolerance". An argument that's never found much traction 'round these parts, alas.

One more thing, Nick - I'm sure you've made your decision (much as I might disagree with it) based on your convictions. I can't believe you'd imagine that Belinda's done anything in the past two years based on hers. And please - please, since I know you know better - don't try to dignify what she's done by calling it "Churchillian". That's simply too much.

And now if my friends on the right can explain to me how the cynicism, pandering and gay-baiting of the current Conservative merits my vote...
Do I see the word Churchillian up there? No.

i find it facinating just how up in arms people have gotten over this. or, you know, just reactive in general.
it's not like it's unheard of for someone to switch parties. this one is just oh-so-exciting because she is high profile, there's a bit of romantic drama involved, and because she stepped into a cabinet position (which i think has more to do with the high profile than anything else).
i don't know, honestly? for me apathy reigns on this one, if it were me i'd get the hell out of the conservative part too, but then, if it were me, i would never have been there in the first place.
okay, i'll stop rambling now...
