_konstrukt (de-strukt)

The Horus Project includes a stunning Flash enabled architecture project (or projekt, apparently), _konstrukt.

Deconstructivism, or Deconstruction, is an approach to building design which attempts to view architecture in its bit and pieces. The basic elements of architecture are dismantled. Deconstructivist buildings may seem to have no visual logic:

They may appear to be made of unrelated, disharmonious abstract forms. Deconstructivism ideas are borrowed from the French philosopher Jacques Derrida.

Borrowed, yes. Understood, no. While the latter contradicts what Derrida actually writes about, difficulties in interpreting coherent texts be they literary or philosophical (Derrida's own writing comes to mind), it remains fair to say Derrida's work toward "destabilizing" narratives has little to do with dismantling them into bits and pieces. Dismantling things into bits and pieces veers toward analysis but that is boring old Greek philosophy and does not have the word "construction" in it besides. Derrida is Algerian and Jewish, btw. In your face totalizing French national identity whose definition is dependent on the trace of non-French alterity!

Architects have a habit of playing it fast and loose with trendy theory (see postmodernism vs. postmodern architecture) but come nowhere close to the monstrosity that is deconstruction as interpreted by fashion designers. So there is my pedantic two cents worth. The animation is truly gorgeous and worth a look despite the download wait.

Penny Arcade had some fun with the word Projekt, in another context: http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2002-01-30&res=l
