Zell Miller

A lifelong Democrat summarizes why it is critical to make the right choice in the coming presidential election. Georgia Senator Zell Miller's speech to the RNC was a body blow to the Kerry candidacy.

Listing all the weapon systems that Senator Kerry tried his best to shut down sounds like an auctioneer selling off our national security but Americans need to know the facts. The B-1 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, dropped 40 percent of the bombs in the first six months of Operation Enduring Freedom. The B-2 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered air strikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Hussein's command post in Iraq. The F-14A Tomcats, that Senator Kerry opposed, shot down Khadifi's Libyan MIGs over the Gulf of Sidra. The modernized F-14D, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered missile strikes against Tora Bora. The Apache helicopter, that Senator Kerry opposed, took out those Republican Guard tanks in Kuwait in the Gulf War. The F-15 Eagles, that Senator Kerry opposed, flew cover over our Nation's Capital and this very city after 9/11. I could go on and on and on: against the Patriot Missile that shot down Saddam Hussein's scud missiles over Israel; against the Aegis air-defense cruiser; against the Strategic Defense Initiative; against the Trident missile; against, against, against. This is the man who wants to be the Commander in Chief of our U.S. Armed Forces? U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?

The Daily Recycler is hosting Senator Miller's speech in Windows Media format. Glenn Reynolds is calling it "the purest voice of Jacksonian America." Quite right.

And then... Andrew Sullivan's response to Senator Miller's speech was offensive. Glenn Reynolds and Dean Esmay both accuse Sullivan of bigotry. I made the following comment to Dean Esmay's post.

Andrew Sullivan has lost the plot. I am very fortunate to live in Ontario, one of the few places in the world where gay marriage (if not divorce, strangely enough) is legal. And I can certainly understand the overwhelming importance of this issue to Sullivan both personally and as a matter of human dignity. The simple fact of the matter, however, is that gay marriage can only be delayed and not denied as a new generation of conservatives comes to agree with Sullivan. The only force that truly endangers not only gay marriage but gay people are the jihadi fascists.

It is the soldier, not the gay blogger, who ensures the rights of gay people.

Didn't you get the feeling that the Bushites hunted high and low through nursing homes to find the insane man they put on stage last night? I think the only body blow would occur if he tripped and pushed Kerry off the state. He's a nutbar for heavens sake. I think he, however, was Churchillian too, more than Jacksonian. Actually it was like the Lord was personally on the TV.

I think we are all being too wishy washy about these comparisons these days. I swear the Lake out the window started to part when I switched the channels past the speeches. As this election is the most important event in human history and indeed since we all were one-celled organisms in a rock pool, I am certain these comparisons are all apt. Yup, I am sure.

state=stage. I hate when I am more cleverer than I am a good speler.

Of course he's insane. 1) We of course KNOW that the US is the ONLY warmaking power in a peaceful world.
2) He disagrees with a recognized "progressive" policy stance, therefore he is ipso facto insane.

No, you can disagree, hold opposing positions and be lucid but if someone reports seeing patriots actually downing skuds safely you have to start wondering what is in the water glass.

Alan: was it the debate about Patriot missile stats that lead you to doubt Senator Miller's sanity? Or was it the delivery? I suspect for most people it would be the latter. I had a rather different reaction to it but I can see how it might be polarizing.

By contrast, what worried me was the way Wolf Blitzer, et al. were so clearly operating on the basis of Democrat campaign war office rebuttals (they admitted as much this morning on CNN). Even the pretence of impartiality was lost. Worse still was Senator McCain condemning Miller for questioning Senator Kerry's patriotism even though Miller had explicitly not done so.

It really is the speech but only as an example of how twisted the entire campaign has become. Facts have become so devalued that their refutation is all that is happening. There is no doubt that the entire exercise is solely aimed at impugning the reputation of Kerry but it is done in such a tawdry way. Cheney once again misquoting on the word "sensitive" and beating it as a drum over and over. There is no thought behind it, just slander. And then the media and the Democrats engage in response at the same level. It is all so surreal.
