Dear Subway

Dear Subway,

I write to express my revulsion at reports of anti-American imagery used in a recent - and ongoing - campaign in German Subway stores. First reports of a fat Statue of Liberty struck me as harmless. The derogatory use of the term "Amis" (German slang for Americans), however, accompanied by an image of people running as two towers collapse on them strikes me as hideous and inexcusable.

Subway should apologize immediately and publically and especially to the German consumers it expected to attract with this hate propaganda. Subway should also expect many customers to avoid doing business with you for some time.

Sincerely, etc. and so forth.

(Shrug) What else does one expect from Krauts? They're lived in a world of denial since the end of the Second World War; I doubt they're even on the same plane of reality as the rest of us at this point. This doesn't surprise me. It does shock me, however that they don't seem to realize the opportunities for evil humour implicit in their own situation. The image of an overgrown middle aged German in a baby's pram being defended by a teenaged "Ami" soldier springs unbidden to mind. Or perhaps of a crowd in swastika t-shirts running from buildings being bombed by Submarine sandwiches shaped like B-29 and Lancaster bombers.

"The German is either at your feet or at your throat"
Truer words were never spoken, Winston.

Subway is, as far as I know, an American multinational. I think the better analogy to the 1930s would be the cynicism of Coca Cola and its like. While it sickens me to say it, this ad campaign could easily have been conjured up by Subway's Canadian branch or, far that matter, in a campaign targeted at American college and university towns.
