Barack Obama

Last night, the much hyped State Senator Barack Obama gave a speech to the DNC. It was one the best political speeches I have ever heard. And President Obama... I like the sound of that. 2012?

The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states. We coach little league in the blue states and, yes, we've got some gay friends in the red states.

There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq, and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

Nawwwww, the guy makes too much sense to ever have a chance to be President. It'd be like a replay of a younger, steelier, more vigorous Reagan, and who'd ever want that?

It would've been interesting to see him and Ryan face off for the senatorial seat in Illinois -- they both had really interesting background stories. (As for Ryan's past -- more interesting than any of us knew. Or wanted to know.)

Of course, with speeches like this, Obama would probably have wiped the floor with him.

Does he have a brother named "Al"?

Great speech. Too bad he's supporting Kerry.

I'm OK. You're OK? Sorry, Mr. Obama, the divisions in America run a little deeper than that. The gist of this excerpt seems to be that, after all, aren't we really all Democrats at heart, even if some of us are too dopey to see it? Reagan at least picked a side.

Alan, Mr. Obama's speech as a whole certainly endorsed plenty of Democrat policies and, of course, a Democrat candidate for the Presidency. I do not see, however, how the excerpt I have cited makes out all Americans to to really be Democrats at heart.

The war to liberate Iraq is probably the most contentious issue amongst the ones cited. Does someone have to be a Democrat to believe that someone could oppose the war and remain a patriot? Though many opposed it on grounds that were explicitly anti-American... I agree with the State Senator that this need not necessarily be the case. Given his partisan audience where upwards of 90% opposed the war Mr. Obama's statement that many patriots supported the war strikes me as a welcome change from the rhetoric adopted by Senator Kennedy, Michael Moore, etc and so forth.

Sorry, Flea. My comments were a little on the facetious side. I guess I've been hearing a wee bit too much about Mahatma Obama the last couple of days. I thought somebody somewhere should say something negative about him. He is, after all, a Democrat, and therefore not fit to run for office. Oops, there I go again. Must. stop. watching. convention. coverage...

Well, that makes perfect sense! :) All contrarians are welcome here. Also, I forgot to mention that I thought that Al Obama pun from "ebt" (?) was clever. Though I expect it must have been difficult to live with through junior high school.

Apparently not everyone is thrilled with Obama:

Obama Truth Squad

And though I'm apparently mispronouncing it, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw his name was "Osama"...

You folks sure this guy isn't just a one trick pony? Is this country ready for an islamic president. Not yet I think.
